👋 Introduction
Welcome to Estes Park Guide. We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring the security of your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information.
👤 Account Information
When you create an account, we collect:
- Email address
- Password (encrypted and securely stored)
- Profile name (optional)
- Profile photo (optional)
📍 Location Data
With your permission, we collect location data to:
- Show nearby trails and trailheads
- Track your hiking progress
- Automatically detect when you arrive at a trailhead (auto-hike detection, using background location within 8 km of Estes Park)
- Provide emergency SOS features
- Share your location with emergency contacts (when enabled)
Auto-hike detection uses background location polling every 30 seconds when you are within the Estes Park area. You can disable this feature anytime in Settings.
⌚ Apple Watch & Health Data
If you use Estes Park Guide with an Apple Watch, the app reads the following data from Apple Health during hike tracking:
- Heart rate
- Step count
- Active energy (calories burned)
This health data is displayed on your hike recap screen and stored with your hike record on our servers to provide post-hike statistics. The app also saves hiking workouts (including route, distance, and duration) to your Apple Health activity history.
Important: Your health data is used solely for app functionality (displaying your hike stats). It is never used for advertising, data mining, or shared with third parties. Health data is not stored in iCloud — it is stored securely on our servers (Supabase) and in Apple Health's own storage.
📊 Usage Data
We automatically collect information about how you use the app:
- Trails viewed and saved
- Hikes completed
- Reviews and ratings submitted
- Photos uploaded
📱 Device & Notification Data
To provide notifications and improve your experience, we collect:
- Push notification token (for delivering notifications)
- Device platform (iOS or Android)
- Language preference
- Subscription plan type
🔧 How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and maintain our services
- Personalize your experience
- Track your hiking achievements
- Send trail alerts, weather warnings, and hiking milestone notifications
- Enable emergency SOS and safety features
- Improve our app and develop new features
- Deliver notifications in your preferred language
- Provide weather alerts for your safety
🆘 Emergency & Safety Features
SOS Alerts: When you trigger an SOS alert, we collect and share your precise location with your designated emergency contacts via SMS. This data is stored securely and cached locally on your device if you are offline, then sent automatically when connectivity is restored.
Emergency Contacts: You may add emergency contacts who can be notified in case of emergency. Their contact information is stored securely on our servers and cached locally on your device for offline access. Cached contacts are synced to the server when you reconnect.
🔔 Push Notifications
We send push notifications for trail alerts, weather warnings, and hiking milestones. You can control which notifications you receive in Settings. Weather alerts may bypass quiet hours for your safety. We use Expo Push Notification service to deliver notifications to your device.
Weather Alerts: We check the National Weather Service (NWS) API every 30 minutes for active weather alerts in the Estes Park area. When a new alert is found, we send a push notification to all users with weather alerts enabled. We do not share your data with NWS.
🌐 Language & Translation
When you select a language preference, this preference is synced to our server so we can deliver notifications in your chosen language. Alert content is translated using Google Cloud Translation API. Your language preference is the only data shared with Google for this purpose.
📥 Offline Data Storage
Certain data is stored locally on your device for offline access, including emergency contacts, SOS alerts (sent when back online), notification settings, and trail/business photos for offline viewing. Cached photos from third-party sources such as Google are stored solely for personal offline use and are not redistributed. This data remains on your device and is synced to our servers when connectivity is available.
🔒 Data Storage & Security
We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data:
- All data is encrypted in transit using SSL/TLS
- Passwords are hashed and salted
- Data is stored on secure servers (Supabase)
- We regularly audit our security practices
- Offline cached data is stored locally on your device
